What’s the worse thing that could happen?

“Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear..” George Addair

I recently gave a talk to a group of business owners, with the aim of inspiring them to think differently, to ask themselves some soul-searching questions and to dig deep to uncover what’s really stopping them from driving their business forward and living the life of their dreams.

It’s the one thing that I see and hear the most in people.
Fear of failure. Fear of the unknown. Fear of success.

Fear is a natural response in our brains, to keep us safe from physical and emotional danger. It’s a response to a stressful stimulus, that triggers the ‘fight or flight’ response.

It can keep us stuck in our comfort zone – or the ‘low-fear zone’. It can allow us to drift along aimlessly, treading the tepid water of life. It creates scary images in our mind, things that may never happen. It helps us make up stories in our mind. It keeps us frozen to the spot, preventing us from moving forwards and achieving our life goals.

Jack Canfield, the author of ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ highlights how fear is one of THE biggest factors that stops people achieving their goals.

I can relate to that…

I was filled with absolute dread and fear when setting up my own business. I could barely get out of bed on that first day, thinking that if I stay snuggled under the duvet, my new reality, would be postponed a little while longer. It didn’t last very long, because I asked myself a very important question…

To me, the worse thing that could happen was:-
Returning to a career that was allowing me to remain in the middle of my comfort zone…

To me, the worse thing that could happen was:-
Reaching a grand old age filled with regrets and ‘what ifs’…

To me, the worse thing that could happen was:-
Not making the change…

My fear became my driving force for change. It was enough to drive me on, and thank goodness it did.

Since taking that leap of faith, I have learned so much and grown as a person, and my life is now filled with so many new opportunities and possibilities.

I have met so many amazing new people. People who inspire me to think differently every single day. People who help me to learn and grow. and be the best that I can be.

Have you had your moment of clarity yet?

Have you recognised that your life will change beyond recognition, the minute you acknowledge that you are 100% responsible for your own thoughts, feelings and actions?

Are you frozen through fear?

If you’re stuck where you are, and know you should be making a change, there’s something to be said for the phrase “feel the fear, and do it anyway”. You don’t need all the answers as you can always figure it out along the way.

  1. Let fear be the driver of change…..fear the process of NOT changing, rather than the process of changing.
  2. Recognise your fears, and when you’re asking yourself “What if it all goes wrong?” ask yourself instead, “What if it all goes right?”
  3. Recognise that failure and failing are very different – failure is for those who have given up at the first bump in the road, failing is a ‘learning’, for those who show the grit and determination to keep on trying. It’s an inevitable part of succeeding.

So, what’s stopping you?
